My Blog List

This is not exactly an exegesis of Kandharalangaram. A friend, who is more a path-breaker for me, suggested some time ago that I should read this great text. Now I start with Thirumuruga Kirubhanandha Variar's commentary, and here are my reflections on this great poetic and devotional work of Arunagirinathar. May the Lord bless us with Peace and Happiness!

A translation of Verse 7

Bonded to suffering
and struggling with foolish agency
is my mind-
banish its illusions.

My Protector,
triumphant in the battlefield-
You, who took the spear
for the ghouls
to jump, bathe, drink and joyously dance
in the pool of blood that spilled
from the Rakshasa heart.

Translation of Verse 5

5

The Child who drank the divine milk
from the nipples of His Mother,
Mother of the perfected worlds,
climbed the floral cradle of Saravana,
and turned to the breasts
of the six maiden:
The sea weeps, the mountain weeps
and Sura weeps
with the sobs of this Child-
praised by all as "Elder of The Hills".

A translation, verse 4

4

"These five, they won't let me be.
I can't abide, or think of You
or place some flowers at your feet
and come to you.

What am I to do,
You who waged war to save the Devas
from depraved, cruel Sura,
plunging your pointed spear, laying him waste,
his dark body in a blink
consigned to a pool of frothing blood."

The five tormentors are, as we saw, the senses. It is for God, who destroys the forces of evil in a moment, to save us from our illusions.

I think this translation of verse 688 of Guru vachaka kovai fits in here:

"You think you are the body, see,
how it binds you with decay:
afflictions of the body
are the very nature of elements.
But you, who can know only Presence,
ought not to identify with the body,
but be indifferent,
ignore the inevitable afflictions-
this is the way to conquer,
the elemental forces."

Translation of verse 3

3

From an ornamented chariot,
He burnt those cities to cinders.
His son, His red arm,
Ornamented with the sharp spear,
Shattered the mountain to atoms,
Decimated the ranks of Rakshasas
In a circle of arms and array,
Destroyed the forces of Sura-
The world of Devas survived.

A translation- verse 2

2

The hymns on the One with the Pointed-Spear,
Are your hopes from destruction and birth;
But you do not care for them.

What would be the day you call upon Him-
The day when the Lord of Death
With his baleful eyes
Blazes forth
Like fire from smoke
And knots his rope
Upon your throat
Tight, and pulls you to him!

A translation verse 1

2.

Undeserving,
Absolutely without discipline,
I was bogged down in worldiness-
In a morass, as it were,
Encrusted in slush-,
You made way for me,
You Compassionate One,
Son of Him who in His red, matted locks,
For ornament, adorns himself
With the river, snake, flowers and the crescent moon.

The Brother-Elephant.

In potent Arunai,
North of the Temple towers,
I sought and found:
the rat-tat-tat of rapping knuckles
on temples of all-comers,
the Elephant with broad, high crown,
who swills sugar with his trunk:
I sought and found
His younger brother-elephant.

This is not exactly a good translation, I know, but this gives you the idea of what this stanza is about.

Arunagirinathar follows the conventional prayer to Lord Ganesa, but with some slight change: this verse is not addressed directly to Him, but in invoking Him as the elder brother of Muruga, he pays obeisance to Him.

I find that interpretations of the symbolism of the form and qualities of our Gods are gaining ground today, as if the Gods are not real as themselves, but stand as some kind of signpost.

If we are going to pray to any God, I feel, let us pray to Him as He is. Let us not interpret Him to our convenient fads.

If Ganesa has elephant-head, let it be so.

We do not gain anything in seeing any 'deeper meaning' in it.
