"These five, they won't let me be.
I can't abide, or think of You
or place some flowers at your feet
and come to you.
What am I to do,
You who waged war to save the Devas
from depraved, cruel Sura,
plunging your pointed spear, laying him waste,
his dark body in a blink
consigned to a pool of frothing blood."
The five tormentors are, as we saw, the senses. It is for God, who destroys the forces of evil in a moment, to save us from our illusions.
I think this translation of verse 688 of Guru vachaka kovai fits in here:
"You think you are the body, see,
how it binds you with decay:
afflictions of the body
are the very nature of elements.
But you, who can know only Presence,
ought not to identify with the body,
but be indifferent,
ignore the inevitable afflictions-
this is the way to conquer,
the elemental forces."
