My Blog List

This is not exactly an exegesis of Kandharalangaram. A friend, who is more a path-breaker for me, suggested some time ago that I should read this great text. Now I start with Thirumuruga Kirubhanandha Variar's commentary, and here are my reflections on this great poetic and devotional work of Arunagirinathar. May the Lord bless us with Peace and Happiness!

Tripura Samhara

This verse celebrates the power of Lord Muruga, the power of goodness over evil.

Some knowledge of Tripura Samhara would help to read this verse, I think details could be found elsewhere.

Here I cannot do any better than to give a word by word translation of the Variar Swamigal text that I have at hand:

Theraniyittu puramerithaan:
Kamalakshan, Tharakakshan, Vidyunmali were three Asuras, who by the power of their penance, attained many boons from Lord brahma, and with overwhelming pride, persecuted the Devas. Having grown weak nd fearful, the Devas went to Lord Siva, who had one drunk poison to save this world. Lord Siva assented to wage war on the Asuras. The Devas built decorated a chariot.

(How they constructed the chariot is described in colourful language, which I will try to give later on).

Lord Siva climbed the chariot, and without taking up arms, he smiled and the three cities of the Asuras were burnt to cinders.

The symbolism of the three cities is, they represent Ego, Ignorance and the sense of Agency. The spark from the smile of God that burns our illusions to dust is the fire of wisdom that is manifested in Grace.
