My Blog List

This is not exactly an exegesis of Kandharalangaram. A friend, who is more a path-breaker for me, suggested some time ago that I should read this great text. Now I start with Thirumuruga Kirubhanandha Variar's commentary, and here are my reflections on this great poetic and devotional work of Arunagirinathar. May the Lord bless us with Peace and Happiness!

The Compassionate Son of Siva

2.

These are the interpretations Variar gives for the name Kumaran: He who is always a young man, He who vanquishes the loathsome, He who is handsome like the love-god Manmatha, He who gives us prosperity and He who is always a celibate. All these layers of meaning enrich the way we see Muruga, who is praised as Kumaran.

However, I find it is enough to take the conventional meaning for Kumaran, which is son, and understand this to mean the son of Siva.

And, Kirubakaran, is of course, the Compassionate One.
